Discovery is a webtoon - an online comic - that updates biweekly on Thursdays.
The story is about two best friends, Marine and Charlie, who take an Alice in Wonderland-like journey through Science History.
One of the things I like most about making this webtoon is to consider how radical some scientific advancements were at the time - even though we take them for granted right now. At the moment, we know about bacteria and viruses. But for a long time in our history, these micro-organisms were still invisible and the way different diseases spread was mostly unknown.
Join me on the journey through science and let’s revisit some amazing discoveries!
Chapter 1 of Discovery explores the Cholera pandemic that ravages London in 1854.
Charlie and Marine find themselves in the middle of an investigation on the origin of this pandemic. In 1854, the miasma theory is still mostly used to explain the spread of diseases. It’s not until the 1880’s that the germ theory of disease is proposed by Robert Koch.
Here, Dr. John Snow, a physician who does know something, is dealing with a cholera pandemic. He is trying to convince the community that Cholera is not spread by ‘bad air’, but by contaminated water. In the meantime, a local priest, Father Whitehead, has familiarized himself with the latest research on disease and does not agree with Dr. Snow’s wild claims of contaminated water.
