Dr. Lizah van der Aart is a Science Artist and Science Communicator based in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Most of the scientific world is invisible, making concepts difficult to grasp. Visualising the invisible world can increase the general understanding of science and technology.

Lizah’s scientific background is in microbiology and bacterial genetics. Their PhD project with Prof. Gilles van Wezel at the Leiden University in the Netherlands encompassed several different areas of study: Streptomyces antibiotic resistance, taxonomy and peptidoglycan architecture. Afterwards, they moved to Newcastle University to work on the evolution and development of multicellularity in Firmicutes with Prof. Jeff Errington. After two years in the Errington lab, they started working as a Freelance science illustrator.

They currently work as an Illustrator and Animator with Neptune Studios.
