Racing Flavobacteria!

The Type 9 Secretion System (T9SS) drives motors to the gliding system in Flavobacteria, bacteria known for their speed. Because the T9SS looks almost mechanical in nature, we interpreted them as cogs and wheels that drive little engines which speed down a runway. The data for the paper was collected using a TITAN electron microscope, a massive machine that looks like a monolith. The bacteria race from the machine, showing the journey that the science in this paper has taken.
